Patch 2.4

March 25, 2008 at 2:50 pm (Uncategorized)

We are live.  I’m currently twiddling my thumbs in a cubicle but I’m already patched and ready to go.

I get off work at 4:30 and don’t have to start raid until 11:45.  I wonder how many times I can run the 5 man.

Nicknames.

March 18, 2008 at 12:13 am (paladin, warcraft)

It’s human nature to give nicknames to things. Realistically, the reason we give something a nickname is to shorten it. This makes certain words easier to say, and they also remove the monotony of saying the same taxing word over and over.

The most notable nicknames are for, you guessed it, actual names. My name in-game is NarfJones. Now, more often than not, people just call me Narf. And for the Counting Crows fans, Mr, Jones. This is basic human instinct and it works out fine. Here is where it starts to get on my nerves.

Paladin. Three syllables. Easy enough. I’m going to list for you the proper and improper ways to shorten this all too often abused word.

First, some rules:
1. “adin” is not a proper suffix. Adding it to a spec title or other phrase does not mean the nickname works.
2. Simply putting the name of the spec into the nickname does not make it okay.

Good Nicknames:
1. Pally (simple to say, and the most common)
2. Holy Pally (this in place of Healadin)
3. Ret Pally (This in place of Retadin or DPSadin)
4. Prot Pally (This works well, but the more common term between Protection Paladins is Tankadin)
5. Tankadin (seems to break the first and possibly second rule, but it flows well enough off the tongue that it doesn’t sound bad. I’ve also become so used to the term, that it just sounds natural.)

Bad Nicknames:
1. Retadin (It just sounds bad. The “T” sound before “adin” makes it sound RETarded. Proper replacement: Ret Pally)
2. DPSadin (Now this is just stupid. Proper replacement: Ret Pally)
3. Retardin (While the most miniscule amount of clever, still stupid. Especially when it’s being said by a paladin. Proper replacement: Ret pally)
4. Healadin (While properly descriptive, sound like a very childish word. Proper replacement: Holy Pally)
5. Holydin (what?! This isn’t even “adin” It’s just “din” You guys are getting lazy. Proper replacement: Holy Pally)
6. Protadin (this is wrong because, once again, the “T” sound before “adin” sounds incorrect and takes more effort to say. Tankadin flows better phonetically and can also be replaced with Prot Pally)
7. Retri (just cutting off the last half of the word does not make it a viable nickname. Also, it fails phonetically.)

And the Number 1 failing nickname:
Pala.
This works under the same rules as Retri. Simply shortening the word does not make it a proper nickname. Also, the phonetics are wretched. Why would you want to say a word that ends with a short vowel sound? It’s a lot like ending a sentence with a preposition.

Update on Nightwalker’s Progression.

March 9, 2008 at 8:38 pm (raiding, warcraft)

We’ve been absolutely steamrolling through t5 content.  A new boss goes down almost every week.  Here’s the update.

The funny thing about Nightwalker’s progression is that it always, and I do mean always. take three nights of attempts to down a new boss.  Whether we spend 3 hours wiping or 1 attempt, it takes 3 nights.

In the past month and a half we have successfully killed Hydross, Morogrim Tidewalker, Fathom Lord Karathress,  Al’Ar, and High Astromancer Solarian.

The issue with downing all these new bosses is that it makes  it critical we continue to one shot our farm bosses.  We raid 3 nights a week.  That may be subject to change in the future, but as of now, it’s sunday, tuesday and wednesday.  before it was up in the air as to where we went at any given day but it was pretty set in stone that we would hit both t5 instances before next week’s reset.  Now, it’s a rush to get 4 bosses in SSC and 3 bosses in TK down in two nights so that we have a whole night to dedicate to a new boss.  Once Leo is down, which we are planning on having done by next weeks reset, That leaves just the two big baddies left.  Lady Vashj and Kael’thas Sunstrider.

Only one night a week to work on these really difficult fights may just not cut it.  By the time we start Mt. Hyjal, which makes me really happy to say in a serious tone, we will almost have to have a 4th night of raiding to continue gearing from the tier 5 content.

Thus is my question to you folks.  As most of the people at this level are casual raiding  guilds, how do you deal with this dilemma?  The only option we can see other than adding an extra night, is to pick an instance to go with for the week.  As it would most likely take the majority of the raiding time to down farmed bosses, leaving very little time for the progression bosses.

Do you down what you can in one instance and then go for the gold, leaving the other instance up for the week?  Or, do you down both t5 dungeons and only give a a few tries to your new target?
